Match at Portchester Castle Monday, June 29, 1987

This match was played as part of Portchester’s “Cricket Week” in 1987 in the magnificent setting of the interior of Portchester Castle - a pitch that has sadly fallen into disuse since.

Driven hard

Neil Blackey, IBM’s opening batsman seems to have made some sort of contact with the ball, as it appears to be coming straight out of his feet towards the camera.

With the Castle’s main gate in the background, the other opener, Micky Wainwright lashes out.  Umpire Andy Weaver looks on impassively.  On this occasion, Micky only scored 5 runs.

Trying to keep the score ticking over

Chet Naik hits out on the way to an equally memorable 3, while Neil Blackey backs up. The late Pete Barratt adjudicates.

Wickets have obviously fallen, as Andy Weaver (number 6 bat) is now padded up in the background with Micky Wainwright (?) exposing himself.  Neil Blackey, en-route to top scoring with 20, hits square.

Even more slashing!
Hitting out

Desperate measures as Steve Williams, the number 9 bat hits out, the score having been on only 45 when he came to the crease.  Pete Barratt looks on.

The end of the innings.  Steve Hicks left (0*) and Steve Williams (11) leave the field with IBM having scored a dismal 74 all out.  Umpire Phil Stride (?) picks up his pebbles.

End of the innings

Despite 3 for 32 by Gerry Jeftha and 3 for 20 by Phil Stride, Portchester knocked off the necessary runs for the loss of 7 wickets.  Obviously not a great batting track on this particular day.
